The new Chiemgauhof Lakeside Retreat – the jewel by Lake Chiemsee

Right on the shores of Lake Chiemsee, the brand-new Chiemgauhof Lakeside Retreat opened its doors in February 2025. A visionary project by Motel One founder Dieter Müller and his wife Ursula Schelle Müller, the historic property has been completely reimagined. After nearly two years of construction, the former traditional house has given way to an elegant new building — thoughtfully designed by renowned Milanese architect Matteo Thun.

Architect Matteo Thun has divided the retreat into three distinct structures, inspired by traditional wooden barns that blend harmoniously into the natural surroundings. Built primarily from local larch and spruce, complemented by natural stone, glass, and marble, the architecture is defined by its clarity of form, regional materials, and deep respect for the location. Large windows, pergolas, and glass walkways frame ever-changing views of nature. With wood, stone, and glass as the main elements, the new buildings create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors: expansive window fronts and surrounding wooden terraces allow the house to merge organically with the lake. Each of the 28 suites, all facing the water, features Japanese-inspired wooden bathtubs, private saunas, panoramic windows, and gas fireplaces.

We are especially proud to have contributed to the unique atmosphere of this extraordinary project with our craftsmanship. All floors in the bar, lounge, restaurant, Bavarian parlour, yoga and fitness areas, as well as the boathouse, were fitted with long boards by Schotten & Hansen – crafted with utmost care, artisanal precision, and in close collaboration with the architect.

Our flooring integrates seamlessly into the overall concept: it reflects the warm, natural materiality of the retreat and enhances its organic character. The style of the Lakeside Retreat can be described as Contemporary Bavarian – a modern take on traditional Bavarian comfort. Custom-made furniture, hand-decorated textiles, traditional tiled stoves, and carpets made from recycled fabrics bring regional craftsmanship into a contemporary setting. In this way, our floors contribute not only to the aesthetic but also to the distinctive sense of life that defines the Chiemgauhof Lakeside Retreat: authentic, grounded, and timelessly beautiful.
