The variety of natural pigments is inexhaustible. Over decades of research, we have found unique ways to transfer the colours of nature onto wood. Our colours are derived from plants or minerals. They blend harmoniously with the wood’s natural tones, shimmer in the finest nuances, and evolve over time.
Torben Hansen has always been fascinated by nature and the natural colour development of surfaces through sunlight, weather, and time. He has spent years researching and experimenting with colours using natural pigments and processes. This journey led to the development of a unique Schotten & Hansen colour system, based on natural ingredients and unmatched in its kind.
I am constantly developing new recipes for my colour library, probably the largest in the world. Additionally, I research new and improved methods to make our products even more durable and valuable.
The source of inspiration for our colour shades is nature. Our colours are imparted to the wood through a complex, multi-stage colouring process involving smoking, washing, and the use of natural essences. The pigments penetrate deeply into the wood pores, giving the material a unique surface effect. This is permanently protected by our natural surface impregnation – ensuring long-lasting beauty. This is the difference compared to colours applied merely on the surface.
Thanks to our special pre-treatment, the wood is more resistant to stains and the colour tone remains more stable. The beneficial properties of the wood are preserved with this method: warmth, elasticity, and breathability. This is one way to help regulate the indoor climate.
