Schotten & Hansen, known for its expertise in crafting bespoke wood flooring and interior surfaces, has completed two major projects at Bayerischer Hof, the legendary Munich hotel known for balancing its historic legacy with contemporary design. Schotten & Hansen has executed a complicated restoration of over 360 m² of flooring and the redesign of Suite 225 in collaboration with Munich-based interior designer Inés Gress.
Surface Restoration at Bayerischer Hof
In 2023, the hotel’s owner, Innegrit Volkhardt, approached Schotten & Hansen to address the condition of the existing teak floors, which had experienced significant wear due to heavy use in areas including the pool, spa, fitness facilities, several staircases, and the Blue Spa Terrace restaurant overlooking the Frauenkirche.
Following a detailed on-site assessment by Schotten & Hansen Managing CEO and Founder Torben Hansen, it became clear that the original teak wood flooring, a protected timber species that is no longer available in this quantity, valued for its exceptional durability and natural weather resistance, had been nearly exhausted and could no longer be restored through traditional sanding and lacquering. Removing and replacing all the floors would have resulted in extended operational shutdowns and a high cost.
Guided by Schotten & Hansen’s philosophy of preserving and revitalising wood wherever possible, the team set out to extend the life of flooring they had not originally installed, as they consider wood too valuable a material to waste. Rather than pursuing a costly and disruptive full replacement, Schotten & Hansen developed a customised surface renewal programme involving its proprietary oil-resin-wax surface treatments, combined with targeted repairs and precise colour blending. Schotten & Hansen’s expertise made its preservation possible, finding solutions to wood problems while focusing on resource conservation and circular thinking.
The team successfully restored approximately 360 m² of flooring in just a few days and ensured long-term durability for the hotel’s high-traffic spaces. With the aim of long-term preservation, Schotten & Hansen also developed a tailored maintenance plan and trained the housekeeping team; a holistic approach that ensures the flooring can be maintained and cared for properly, without disrupting the hotel’s guests and services.
