Wood speciesLong Board — Wood species
Currently, we primarily use European oak varieties for our products, but we also offer a selection of other wood types such as traditional coniferous woods like larch, Douglas fir, or spruce. We can fulfill even unusual customer requests, for instance with exotic woods grown through sustainable plantation farming. Every piece of wood we use comes from sustainably managed forest regions and is brought directly to our factory for processing. We work with long-term partners recognized as leaders in their fields in each step of the process.
DimensionsLong Board — Dimensions
Carefully using the resources we have is a major priority for us. Clearly, a round tree trunk doesn’t provide multiple pieces of wood in the same size. That’s why, to ensure we can use the entirety of the tree, we process lengths and widths as they come. We use the wood as the tree is cut. If you don’t want to receive this kind of natural size distribution, we can also provide fixed lengths and widths.
- Lenghts: 3000mm to 5000mm, 500mm grid; up to 5% short boards
- Widths: 160mm – 360mm; 20 mm grid (fine Character selection only up to 280 mm width)

ConstructionLong Board — Construction
We manufacture our floorboards from three solid layers of wood glued together permanently. This allows us to keep the wood from moving excessively, reducing swelling, shrinkage, and the appearance of joints. The top, visible layer is made of the selected wood; the middle layer and base layer are made of domestic coniferous wood. This method doesn’t just use less resources, it's also technically superior to using pure solid wood. We’ve developed the glues we use in close collaboration with our suppliers. They have longer than average drying times, but are resistant to boiling water and free from solvents and formaldehyde. This helps our floorboards resist shrinking or expanding even when exposed to changing temperatures. Even extreme climates – whether it’s 5% humidity in Aspen/Colorado or 95% in Hong Kong – are no problem for our products.
- Thickness: 19 mm
- Top layer: 4.5 mm

Selections & TreatmentsLong Board — Selections & Treatments

Character selection is the crucial element that determines the overall finished appearance. The grain and appearance of the raw cut material will vary depending on the life of the tree, where it grew, and the layer of the trunk from which the wood was taken. We painstakingly grade boards by hand before finishing, dividing them into three categories: “fine,” “medium,” and “coarse.” Combining the processing methods “brushed,” “hand-planed,” and “shrunk,” we create textures and surface effects perfectly adapted to your requests and requirements.
Fine
Smooth, even appearance with some small branches. Sophisticated, elegant, and discreet, with a certain degree of linearity and formal austerity; it has an impeccable and highly precise feel which is soft and even. Slanting light will subtly expose the texture of the grain in rich detail.
Smooth, even appearance with some small knots. Sophisticated, elegant, and discreet, understated and dignified, in short – classic. The soft ridges are palpable, yet unobtrusive. They are highlighted gently by the play of light.
Smooth, natural appearance with some small knots. Somewhat more flowing and varied, less linear and austere. Naturally drying the wood produces a subtle “shrinkage effect.” The wood feels older, as though it were covered in very fine wrinkles. Angled light reveals the subtlety and variation of the wrinkles
Medium
Fine and even wood grain interrupted by lively knots and grooves. The finishing process produces a surface with a relatively even and uniform feeling; branches provide small visual diversions and variety.
Fine and even wood grain interrupted by lively knots and grooves. The planning blade leaves behind small, irregular, and striking fractions at uneven or harder places. These add natural detail and richness to the charisma of the wood, making the floor appear somewhat older, more mature, and richer. The soft ridges are palpable, yet unobtrusive. They are highlighted gently by the play of light.
The “shrinkage effect” is clear in the striking veneers; soft areas contract slightly more than hard areas, which accentuates all the features of the wood, allowing them to shine. The floorboards appear aged, yet timeless, with elegantly rustic details. There’s always something new to discover – gentle irregularities, memorable details; each piece has different characteristics, and the boards are a true tactile experience. The play of light evens out the effect, allowing striking areas to emerge gently.

Coarse — Shrunk
The pure, powerful beauty of nature. Distinct irregularities, many knots, some of them large, long furrows and fissures define the appearance of the wood and feel great on your feet. Extraordinary character and rich detail.
ColourLong Board — Colour

We use both characteristic wood colour variations and the palette of nature to colour our floorboards. Over decades of working with demanding customers, we’ve developed a wide spectrum of customer-specific shades and special colors, which we provide in addition to our standard shades. We are also happy to develop a unique shade just for you.

SurfaceLong Board — Surface
Our surface finishing treatments at Schotten & Hansen are unlike anything else in the industry. We use our proprietary processes to provide a never-before-seen level of surface quality – open and breathable, elastic and warm, easy to clean and repair. Our products are made for a lifetime.
SamplesLong Board — Samples
We keep our treatments as natural as possible. In general, customers should be aware that samples will not be able to fully reflect the character of the final product. First, due to the small size of the sample, you will only see a small section of your chosen combination of Character selection and finishing. Second, colours always differ slightly within a certain colour spectrum.
InstallationLong Board — Installation
Schotten & Hansen products should be installed by professionally trained personal. This is the only way to provide an appropriate level of quality when laying the floor and ensure exact workmanship in crafting transitions and joints. The way lengths and widths of floorboards are combined, along with natural colour nuances, has a major influence on the floor’s overall visual appearance. Professional installers will consider growth features and colour nuances as well as the dimensions of the floorboards. After manufacturing, the finished floor is carefully covered and protected; it should also receive an initial treatment before being moved to its final location.
